Flagstaff – Not just a nickname for your manliness
Net step was holing up in a motel for a little while in Flagstaff, Arizona. (The hotel was Western Hills Motel, and I heartily recommend it.) Flagstaff is a very woodsy place – large tree-filled parks all over. A great place to bike out and practice recorder. Downtown was low-key and easy to bike or walk around.
My first day in, while waiting for my motel’s check in time, I headed over to the Museum of Northern Arizona. The museum focused mostly on the cultures of the indigenous people who lived and lived there. There was also a very neat-o exhibit on the translation of Star Wars into Navajo, which is apparently not only a thing, but an important thing.
Beautiful murals told the indigenous history of the people.
Tree rings show how it’s possible to date objects a thousand years old, and older.
When all the little ants are marching, they all do it the same.
Indigenous peoples everywhere always seem really into pottery.
I found the lines of this simple sculpture very graceful and captivating – it reminded me of Michelangelo’s Prieta.
Celebrating the dubbing of Star Wars in Navajo.
Everyone got decked out for the occasion.
Fusion artwork.
My new girlfriend.
The food in Flagstaff was pretty so-so. Some places came highly recommended by locals, but the food turned out to be just bland on bland. (At least the theme was consistent.)
Diablo Burger wasn’t bad – their thing is burgers on English muffins. They are the “Diablo Burgers” table-maker’s best customer.
Here’s on of those burgers. The fried were crispy and tasty.
Route 66 Dog Haus has decent hot dogs and related. The chilli burger was pretty good, but the Chicago dog made a better picture.
Mama Burger was my best meal in Flagstaff. Interesting but not overdone burgers, with names like Kahuna and Cholula Jack.
Would you believe it? This is a Kahuna and Cholula Jack.
Actually, Mama Burger was my two best meals in Flagstaff.
Flagstaff actually has a lot of Thai restaurants – it’s kind of thing here.
Swaddee Thai Cuisine was better than expected! Crispy tofu was actually crispy on the outside and creamy in the middle.
They asked how spicy we wanted it, out of five … we said five.
But it was only a one. I’m sure it was a five to those in Flagstaff who have only ever tasted bland. But the food was still good here.
Flagstaff didn’t have any distilleries that I deigned to visit – but it did have a lot of breweries. This is where the action is. If you’re in Flagstaff, go to the breweries. I also checked out a meadery (not very good 🙁 ) and a very good cocktail bar.
Wanderlust Brewing, the only brewery not in downtown, was my first stop. There brown was perfectly made for my taste – malty, smooth and rich.
The bartender mixed me together a sour and a farmhouse to make another flavorful concoction.
ANX is a cocktail bar that I say can hang anywhere. Cocktails are creative and unique. They even charge big-city prices.
Their various house-made bitters, syrups and cordials.
AND they serve a mean plate of crispy, savory Brussels sprouts.
Drinking Horn Mead Hall mostly flavors their mead — there’s a reason. They just need to keep practicing :).
Beaver Street Brewery came next.
Here’s their food. It was fine.
As was their beer!
Then we have Historic Brewing …
… with satisfying brews and bar food.
Dark Sky Brewery.
The beers were good, but the pizza oven was better.
The thing-crust pizzas were clearly made with high-quality ingredients.
In fact, we decided to get two.
Finally, Mother Road Brewing (Historic Route 66, which runs through Flagstaff, is dubbed the Mother Road. Still, it runs through a lot of other cities too, so, maybe don’t brag about it so much?)
They did have cool Chinese lanterns.
And food. It sounded so good on the menu! But, it wasn’t. Except the tots – those were primo, crispy and bursting with potato goodness.
Finally, Flagstaff has easy-to-follow instructions for those women who wish to expose their breasts in public, and for those who wish to observe those breasts.
